Chem milling is a subtractive manufacturing process that involves selectively removing material from a part to achieve a desired shape or finish. The process begins by coating the workpiece with a masking material, such as a photoresist, that is resistant to the chemical solution. A pattern or design is then transferred onto the masking material using a photographic process or computer-aided design (CAD) software.
The workpiece is then immersed in a chemical solution, usually an acid or alkaline solution, that selectively dissolves the exposed areas of metal. The depth of material removal can be controlled by adjusting the concentration of the solution, the temperature, and the immersion time. Once the desired depth is achieved, the part is removed from the solution, and the masking material is stripped away to reveal the finished part.
